Abstract

The coastal area of Tamendao Beach in North Leato Urban Village, Gorontalo City has experienced the organic growth of culinary tourism activities that developed without being preceded by a structured spatial planning process, thereby giving rise to spatial adaptation and changes in the architectural typology of residential buildings in the area. Studies integrating spatial configuration and architectural typology in coastal tourism areas remain relatively limited, even though this phenomenon is important to understand as a form of adaptive architectural response to the socio-economic dynamics of coastal communities. This study aims to analyze the spatial adaptation and architectural typology in the coastal area of North Leato Beach, namely Tamendao Beach. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach through observation, interviews, and documentation, analyzed using a spatial approach based on Geographic Information System (GIS) to compare imagery of the area between 2022 and 2026, as well as a typological approach visualized using ArchiCAD software. The results show that the area has transformed from a natural coastal space into a structured area with a 154.96-meter paving block pathway connecting the settlement to a cluster of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) built on stilt structures above the water, forming three zones—settlement, transitional, and tourism-commercial—with building orientation shifting from facing the road to facing the sea. The architectural typology was identified in three building types: residential, residential-commercial, and MSME-commercial buildings oriented toward the sea. This research is beneficial as a basis for consideration in adaptive and sustainable coastal spatial planning for the government and local community. Overall, the spatial adaptation and architectural typology that emerged occurred without prior structured spatial planning, resulting in an irregular pattern of building distribution and public spatial circulation along the coast.
