Abstract

Vernacular architecture emerges from the needs of communities to adapt to their environment, culture, and the availability of local materials. As time progresses, traditional values often undergo shifts, creating a need to revive them through contemporary design. This study examines the typological transformation of the bale lumbung in Sade Village into a modern villa design as an approach to the development of vernacular architecture. The study focuses on changes in the functions of public and private spaces when adapted to a modern villa, as well as the sustainability of traditional tied and wooden-peg joint techniques in construction, which increasingly rely on new materials and methods. The bale lumbung is also positioned as a typological reference, examined not only through its physical form but also through its social meaning, activity patterns, and construction principles. The research methods include an analysis of the bale lumbung and modern villa, three-dimensional modeling of joints, and qualitative and comparative comparisons between buildings. The novelty of this study lies in examining the transformation of Bale Lumbung architectural elements, particularly the relationship between public and private spaces and traditional joint techniques, in response to the requirements of modern villa design. Through this analysis, the study explores which elements of the bale lumbung can be preserved and adapted for villa design, particularly regarding spatial organization and material connection techniques. The findings are expected to demonstrate how traditional Lombok architecture can be transformed into contemporary design while supporting the preservation of local values in modern buildings.
