Abstract

This research aims to investigate: (1) the direct impact of emotional intelligence on students' comprehension of mathematical concepts at State Vocational Schools in East Jakarta, (2) the direct effect of learning independence on the understanding of mathematical concepts, (3) the direct influence of emotional intelligence on learning independence, and (4) the indirect effect of emotional intelligence on the understanding of mathematical concepts through learning independence among students at State Vocational Schools in East Jakarta. The study employs a survey method utilizing correlational path analysis techniques. The findings reveal that: (1) emotional intelligence significantly influences the understanding of mathematical concepts among State Vocational High School students in East Jakarta, as indicated by a Sig. value of 0.038 < 0.05 and a t count of 2.105 > t table 1.989. (2) Learning independence also has a significant direct effect on the understanding of mathematical concepts, with a Sig. value of 0.001 < 0.05 and a t count of 3.368 > t table 1.989. (3) Emotional intelligence significantly affects students' learning independence, demonstrated by a Sig. value of 0.000 < 0.05 and a t count of 16.259 > t table 1.989. (4) Furthermore, there is a significant indirect effect of emotional intelligence on the understanding of mathematical concepts through learning independence, with a t count of 3.915 > t table 1.989. In conclusion, emotional intelligence and learning independence are crucial factors in enhancing students' success in grasping mathematical concepts. Therefore, it is recommended that educators implement teaching strategies that focus on fostering emotional intelligence and promoting learning independence to optimize students' understanding of mathematical concepts.
