Abstract

The increasing use of visually oriented social media has transformed the way interior spaces are experienced and communicated, shifting them from purely physical environments into visually represented content through user-generated content (UGC) on social media. This study aims to identify and classify interior design elements that trigger UGC, as well as to examine how these elements shape the visual representation of space on social media within the context of digital culture. This research employs a literature review approach using thematic synthesis to analyze academic sources related to interior design and user-generated content practices on social media. The analysis focuses on observable interior elements, which are categorized into spatial elements (layout, scale, proportion, and focal area) and visual elements (color, lighting, material, and texture). The findings indicate that focal areas, lighting, and color play dominant roles in shaping visually appealing representations on social media through the enhancement of contrast, visual emphasis, and the formation of spatial identity in digital content. Spatial elements function as the foundation for shaping user experience and spatial orientation, while visual elements act as a medium of visual communication that influences how spaces are represented and shared on social media. This study contributes by demonstrating that interior design elements function not only as physical components but also as visual constructs that mediate spatial experience and its representation in the digital realm. Therefore, interior design practices need to integrate spatial design strategies with visual communication approaches to support both physical experience and digital visibility.
