About Jurnal Desain

Jurnal Desain is a peer-reviewed scholarly journal that publishes original and high-quality research in design, architecture, visual art, and visual culture. The journal provides an interdisciplinary forum for researchers, academics, designers, architects, artists, and practitioners to advance scholarly knowledge through theoretically informed, methodologically sound, and analytically rigorous studies.

Jurnal Desain primarily publishes original empirical research articles and design studies that make a clear scholarly contribution to these fields. Manuscripts may examine visual, material, spatial, digital, media-related, cultural, or practice-based phenomena through appropriate scholarly and methodological approaches. Conceptual or theoretical manuscripts may be considered when they are applied to a clearly defined corpus, case, artefact, practice, or phenomenon relevant to the journal's focus and scope.

Jurnal Desain is published quarterly by Universitas Indraprasta PGRI, Jakarta, Indonesia, and applies a double-blind peer-review process to all manuscripts that proceed to external review.

Peer Review

Manuscripts that successfully complete the Initial Editorial Assessment are evaluated through a double-blind peer-review process by two independent qualified reviewers.

For manuscripts processed through the regular review pathway, the overall process from initial submission to online publication typically takes approximately 3–5 months. The actual duration may vary depending on reviewer availability, the number of review and revision rounds, the authors’ response time, manuscript complexity, and completion of the post-acceptance production process. In some cases, the overall process may take up to six months.

Reviewer recommendations are advisory. Revised manuscripts are evaluated by the Section Editor, who provides an editorial recommendation to the Editor-in-Chief. The final editorial decision remains the responsibility of the Editor-in-Chief and is based on the reviewers’ assessments, the adequacy of the authors’ revisions, scholarly quality, publication ethics, and the journal’s editorial standards.

Publication Schedule

Jurnal Desain is published quarterly, with regular issues scheduled in:

September · December · March · June

Manuscripts are processed continuously throughout the year and are not required to wait for an approaching issue before entering the editorial and peer-review process.

Jurnal Desain may apply an Issue in Progress publication model, allowing final and publication-ready articles to be published progressively within the corresponding regular issue.

Publication Charges

Article Submission Charge (ASC)

IDR 0

Jurnal Desain does not charge authors for manuscript submission or Initial Editorial Assessment.

Article Processing Charge (APC)

IDR 1,000,000

Per accepted article, effective from Vol. 14 No. 1 (September 2026).

The APC is payable only after the manuscript has formally received an Accepted editorial decision.

A 100% APC waiver is provided for articles in which all authors are affiliated with institutions outside Indonesia.

Payment of the APC does not influence peer review, editorial decisions, or acceptance for publication.

Optional Fast-Track Review Fee: IDR 500,000 per manuscript

Fast-Track Review is an optional accelerated review pathway and is charged separately from the APC. Participation in Fast-Track Review does not guarantee acceptance, publication in a particular issue, or issuance of a Letter of Acceptance (LoA) within a predetermined period.

Submit Your Manuscript

Authors should first ensure that their manuscript is consistent with the Focus and Scope and complies with the journal's Author Guidelines.

Manuscripts must be prepared using the official Jurnal Desain Article Template and must satisfy all requirements specified in the Submission Preparation Checklist.

All submissions must be accompanied by the required Author Integrity Declaration and any other supporting documents applicable to the study. 

Manuscripts must be submitted electronically through the Jurnal Desain Open Journal Systems (OJS). Registration and login are required to submit a manuscript and to monitor its editorial status.

Open Access

Jurnal Desain operates as a Gold Open Access journal. All published articles are made freely available online immediately upon publication, without subscription fees, access charges, or embargo periods.

Articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC 4.0).

Authors retain copyright to their published articles and grant Jurnal Desain the right of first publication in accordance with the journal's Copyright and Licensing policies.

Jurnal Desain invites qualified academics, researchers, and professionals to join our reviewer pool in the following fields:

We welcome applicants with relevant academic expertise, research experience, and a verifiable scholarly publication record who are willing to contribute to the scholarly quality and integrity of the journal through independent and constructive peer review.

Reviewer Qualifications

Applicants should meet the following minimum requirements:

  • hold at least a Master’s degree (S2 or equivalent) in a relevant field;
  • have academic or professional expertise relevant to one or more of the listed fields;
  • have an active and identifiable Google Scholar profile;
  • for applicants affiliated with institutions in Indonesia, have a valid SINTA ID;
  • have a verifiable scholarly publication record relevant to their field;
  • demonstrate recent scholarly activity and sufficient expertise to provide substantive manuscript evaluation;
  • be willing to conduct reviews independently, objectively, and confidentially;
  • have no relevant conflict of interest with the manuscript or authors being reviewed; and
  • be willing to comply with the journal’s Peer Review Process, Reviewer Guidelines, Publication Ethics, confidentiality requirements, conflict-of-interest provisions, and Artificial Intelligence Policy.

A Scopus Author ID is considered an advantage but is not mandatory.

Reviewer Responsibilities

Selected reviewers may be invited to evaluate manuscripts according to their field of expertise and are expected to:

  • provide objective, critical, constructive, and academically grounded reviews;
  • assess manuscripts independently and confidentially;
  • disclose any actual, potential, or perceived conflict of interest;
  • maintain the confidentiality of submitted manuscripts and supporting materials;
  • comply with the journal’s policy prohibiting the use of generative AI or AI-assisted systems in peer review; and
  • complete assigned reviews within the specified review period.

Jurnal Desain applies a double-blind peer-review system. Reviewer recommendations constitute independent scholarly advice and do not determine the final editorial decision.

Recognition and Documentation

Reviewers who are formally assigned to review manuscripts may receive:

  • an Official Reviewer Assignment Letter for the relevant manuscript review;
  • a Reviewer Certificate recognizing their contribution to Jurnal Desain; and
  • acknowledgment as part of the journal’s reviewer pool, subject to editorial and administrative requirements.

Please note that the journal’s institutional Reviewer Appointment Decree (Surat Keputusan/SK) is updated according to the administrative cycle of the institution. The next scheduled update is expected in January 2028.

The absence of an immediate institutional appointment decree does not affect the validity of reviewer assignments formally issued by Jurnal Desain during the current period.
